South Africa is set to implement a new digital customs declaration system, requiring all travelers entering or exiting the country to submit their declarations online from June 1, 2026. This initiative is a part of the country’s efforts to modernize its border management, streamline travel and trade processes, and enhance compliance with customs laws. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has introduced this system to improve efficiency and strengthen border security.
Under the updated regulations, travelers who bring foreign-registered vehicles into South Africa must declare their vehicles at ports of entry and obtain a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). This requirement extends to vehicles from neighboring countries that are members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). The TIP allows foreign vehicles to be legally used in South Africa for up to six months, providing for multiple entries and exits during that period without the need for a new permit each time.
Importantly, there is no fee associated with submitting an online customs declaration or acquiring a Temporary Import Permit. Travelers can complete the necessary procedures through the SARS website or mobile application before arriving at the border. Upon completion, they will receive a reference number to present when entering or leaving the country. To support travelers who have not completed their declarations in advance, SARS will offer assistance through digital kiosks and support services available at border posts.
Despite the transition to digital declarations, customs inspections and border checks will still be conducted as deemed necessary. The overarching goal of the new system is to reduce paperwork, bolster revenue collection, and make compliance more straightforward for legitimate travelers. The change is part of a broader strategy by South Africa to modernize its customs administration and improve the management of the cross-border movement of people, goods, and vehicles.
