Nigeria’s health authorities have confirmed a case of Ebola in Abuja, raising concerns about the spread of the virus amid a regional outbreak. The case involves a woman who had traveled through Uganda and later tested positive after developing symptoms on October 7. She was admitted to a hospital four days later, according to Nigeria’s health ministry.

The confirmation of this Ebola case has prompted immediate public health responses, including contact tracing and heightened disease surveillance. Health Minister Muhammad Pate stated that officials have identified 44 individuals who may have been in contact with the patient as part of efforts to curb further transmission.

This development occurs against the backdrop of a broader regional outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has also been reported in Kenya and other parts of Africa. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has intensified its surveillance activities, emphasizing early detection, laboratory testing, and the isolation of patients to contain the virus effectively. The country had previously established an Ebola task force following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo earlier this year.

Uganda’s health ministry clarified that the woman had traveled to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo for business purposes and had only transited through Uganda. The exact location of her exposure to the virus remains under investigation, and Ugandan officials stressed that transit through the country does not necessarily pinpoint where the infection occurred.

Africa’s public health authorities are particularly concerned about this outbreak due to its spread across multiple geographical areas. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is known to cause severe illness and can be fatal. Health officials are focused on quickly identifying infections, monitoring exposed individuals, and implementing coordinated public health measures to prevent further spread.

Nigeria’s health response aims to contain the confirmed case, trace contacts, and strengthen preparedness as authorities continue to investigate the source of the infection. The situation underscores the serious risks posed by the virus and the importance of regional cooperation in managing public health threats.
