Nigeria has successfully completed its government-assisted repatriation programme from South Africa, bringing 1,490 citizens back home over a five-week period. This operation, which took place from June 10 to July 15, was initiated in response to escalating tensions and anti-immigrant demonstrations targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
The completion of this programme marks the end of Nigeria’s planned evacuation mission. Similar efforts to repatriate citizens were also undertaken by other African nations, including Uganda, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, highlighting a regional response to the growing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa.
Despite concluding its evacuation efforts, Nigeria has expressed ongoing concerns regarding the safety and treatment of foreign nationals residing in South Africa. The Nigerian government has reiterated its strong opposition to xenophobia and has committed to addressing the issue through continued diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.
The Nigerian initiative reflects broader apprehensions within the African continent regarding the treatment of immigrants in South Africa. The country has witnessed repeated waves of anti-immigrant sentiments, prompting various nations to take protective measures for their citizens.
