The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has initiated Filing Season 2026 with the introduction of innovative digital features aimed at easing the tax filing process and enhancing security measures for taxpayers. Since the commencement of the filing season on July 1, 2026, SARS has successfully auto-assessed over 1.9 million taxpayers, distributing nearly R8 billion in tax refunds within the first 72 hours of the season. The agency anticipates completing more than six million auto-assessments throughout this period.
Among the newly launched enhancements are more precise auto-assessments facilitated by the integration of expanded third-party data. Taxpayers can now benefit from improved self-service options available through eFiling and the SARS MobiApp. To further bolster security, the agency has implemented biometric verification and two-factor authentication features. Additionally, taxpayers can now access AI-powered assistance, upload documents via WhatsApp, and receive tax notices digitally.
SARS has advised taxpayers who are selected for auto-assessment to use the official digital platforms to review their assessments, reducing the need for unnecessary visits to physical service centers. This approach is designed to streamline the process and make it more convenient for users.
Moreover, the agency has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against phishing scams and fraudulent refund schemes. Taxpayers are reminded that SARS does not request passwords, one-time pins (OTPs), or banking details through email, SMS, phone calls, or social media platforms. This reminder is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to protect taxpayers from potential cyber threats.
